Innovative Drying Solutions: Adaptive Racking System in Reefer Trucks for Cannabis Cultivation

In the volatile landscape of cannabis cultivation, finding efficient and cost-effective drying solutions can be challenging, especially when hindered by regulatory hurdles. This article explores an intelligent approach to drying and curing cannabis crops using an adaptive racking system in 53′ refrigerated reefer trucks. What is a reefer truck? A reefer truck is a refrigerated trailer that gets attached to a semi-truck in order to transport perishables and other temperature-sensitive goods. Despite the challenges presented by compliance requirements, this method offers flexibility, control over temperature, and minimizes expenditure on hard assets.

Maximizing Space and Airflow

The racking system is designed to optimize space utilization within the reefer truck. Two lines of racks are placed one foot below the ceiling, with a center walkway. This arrangement ensures efficient use of vertical space while maintaining easy access for inspection and maintenance. Equipped with six strategically placed hurricane fans on the floor, equal airflow distribution is achieved. To enhance airflow further, two dehumidifiers are positioned at specific intervals (approximately 18′ and 36′) within the reefer truck.

Leveraging Reefer Trucks’ Capabilities

Reefer trucks offer unique advantages for drying cannabis. Firstly, they provide the ability to bypass compliance requirements due to their mobility, proving to be a valuable asset for cultivators operating in restrictive regions. Furthermore, temperature control is within reach, enabling fine-tuning of the drying process. The cooling system of the reefer truck supplies bursts of cold air when activated, facilitating additional airflow within the container. Leveraging this drying power eliminates the need for expensive dehumidifiers in arid areas.

Cost-Effective Approach

Recognizing the rapid evolution and uncertainties in the industry, minimizing expenditure on fixed assets is crucial. Although the investment in dehumidifiers, fans, and electrical supplies may seem substantial, renting the reefer trucks seasonally from June to October proves to be a cost-effective alternative. Purchasing a new reefer truck can easily exceed $100,000, while used options start at $20,000. Renting, on the other hand, typically costs between $1500 and $2000 per month. The drawback lies in the need to set up electrical boxes and service each container annually upon rental return.

In the face of complex regulations, accessing suitable drying and curing spaces in the cannabis industry can be challenging. The adaptive racking system in 53′ refrigerated reefer trucks provides an innovative solution allowing cultivators to maintain control over the drying process. By capitalizing on the unique features of reefer trucks, cultivators can optimize space, airflow, and temperature control while minimizing capital investments. As the industry continues to evolve, this intelligent approach offers a practical and adaptable solution for cannabis growers seeking efficient and cost-effective drying methods.
